Rogaine is a topical solution for hair loss treatment, approved by the FDA. It contains minoxidil and can be bought without a prescription. The solution comes in two formulations: 5% for men and 2% for women.

Rogaine was developed from an oral blood pressure medication called minoxidil (Loniten), which has serious side effects on the heart and circulatory system. However, applying minoxidil directly to the scalp was found to cause hair growth in bald areas. It typically works best in the crown area but can work to a lesser degree in other areas

Using Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a medication used for hair loss that is applied directly to the scalp twice a day. It should be applied only to the scalp and not the hair, and in areas where hair is thinning. There are two formulations: 2% and 5%. The 5% solution is more effective but can cause irritation. Rogaine Foam is a convenient option that is less sticky and irritating. It has been observed that using Rogaine once a day is almost as effective as using it twice a day. If minoxidil is discontinued, the effects wear off within three months, so it is important to use it regularly.

Use in Women

Minoxidil should only be used in women at a concentration of 2%. Women are more susceptible to side effects such as hypotension, dizziness, and contact dermatitis when using a 5% solution. To avoid facial hair growth, apply the medication carefully and avoid the temples and forehead. Facial hair is temporary and will go away once you stop using it.
